Nusa Penida, Mount Batur, Uluwatu — which need a tour? Which are better DIY? Honest advice.
Bali's attractions are cheap — temple entries are IDR 30,000–50,000 ($2–3), rice terraces IDR 20,000–80,000 ($1.25–5), and most waterfalls IDR 10,000–20,000 ($0.60–1.25). The real question is whether you need a guided tour or can just show up on your scooter.
| Attraction | Entry | Pre-book? | Best approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nusa Penida day trip | Boat + driver ~$35–50 | ✅ Yes | Need boat transfer + car/driver on island |
| Mount Batur sunrise | ~$30–50 with guide | ✅ Yes | Must have licensed guide (required) |
| Uluwatu Temple + Kecak | IDR 50k ($3) + IDR 100k ($6) | No | Show up before sunset, buy Kecak ticket at gate |
| Tegallalang Rice Terraces | IDR 20k ($1.25) | No | Scooter from Ubud, 20 min |
| Tirta Empul (water temple) | IDR 50k ($3) | No | Scooter or driver, bring sarong |

| Cooking class | $25–40 | ✅ Yes | Book 1–2 days ahead |
| White water rafting | $25–45 | ✅ Yes | Need operator + equipment |
You need a fast boat transfer + a driver on the island — Nusa Penida has no Grab, terrible roads, and dangerous cliffs. A day tour ($35–50) includes boat, driver, and visits to Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong, and Crystal Bay. DIY is possible but risky on a scooter (the roads seriously injure tourists regularly). This is the one place where a tour is genuinely worth it.
Licensed guides are legally required for Mount Batur treks. Tours start at 2–3 AM, summit for sunrise at 5:30 AM. Cost: $30–50 including guide, breakfast, and hotel pickup. You cannot hike independently — the local guide association enforces this.
Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Tirta Empul, Besakih — all are walk-up with entry fees of IDR 30,000–60,000 ($2–3.75). Bring a sarong (free loaners at most temples). For Uluwatu, the Kecak fire dance at sunset is IDR 100,000 ($6) — buy at the gate, arrive 30 min early for good seats.
Tegallalang (IDR 20,000 / $1.25), Jatiluwih (IDR 40,000 / $2.50), and Sidemen (free roadside views). All walkable or scooterable. No tour needed. Go early morning to beat crowds and heat.
