The Direct Answer
You can eat three full meals in Bali for $4–6/day at warungs. A warung is a small family-run eatery — Bali's equivalent of a roadside diner. Nasi goreng (fried rice) costs IDR 18,000–25,000 ($1.10–1.55), nasi campur (mixed rice) IDR 22,000–35,000 ($1.40–2.20). Even a Bintang beer is only IDR 25,000–35,000 ($1.55–2.20). If you eat at warungs 90% of the time, food in Bali is absurdly cheap.

Food Scams to Avoid
- "Tourist menu" warungs near attractions — prices 2–3× higher. Walk 100m from any temple gate for real prices.
- Beach warungs with no prices displayed — always ask before ordering. A nasi goreng should never be above IDR 35,000.
- "Special" Kopi Luwak — the civet coffee scam. Most is fake. Don't pay more than IDR 30,000 for a cup.
- Overcharging for sambal — sambal is free at proper warungs. If they charge IDR 10,000+, you're at a tourist place.
- Minimart mark-up on beer — Circle K and Alfamart sell Bintang for IDR 25,000–30,000. Tourist shops charge IDR 40,000+.
🍽️ Pro tip: The best indicator of a good warung is the number of locals eating there. If it's full of Indonesian families at lunchtime, the food is excellent and cheap. Empty warung with a tourist-facing sign? Skip it.
